Following in the wake of her debut full-length album Athena, Sudan Archives recently embarked on a multi-date tour across Europe and North America, which continues through the end of the year and finishes in Knoxville, Tennessee next March.

Honing in on a central theme of duality and identity, Brittney Parks— the woman behind Sudan Archives— emphasizes the idea of two opposites existing within one entity while touching on topics of female strength and relationships. Aptly named after the Greek goddess of heroic courage and justice, Athena brings a significant depth to Parks’ growing body of work, with exquisite layers of instrumentation and palpable energy with each new track.

Musically, the record is impeccable. “Did You Know” opens the album with urgent plucking that gently slides into a heavy beat, showcasing marked hip-hop influences right after she admits, “I thought I could rule the world, when I was a little girl.” In the stunning and impressive “Confessions,” shared in September prior to the album release, violins fiercely wail with precision alongside elegant harmonies that flow like fresh rippling waves.

The beauty and authenticity carry through the remaining twelve tracks, from the mellow “Down On Me” and calculated “Limitless” to the galloping and steady “Green Eyes.” Later, she leans into simple, modern rhythms, like those found on the delicate “Pelicans In The Summer,” which brings the album to a close with a jazzy R&B groove.

Catch Sudan Archives on her current tour and be sure to pick up her new album, Athena.
