Miss Grit is thrilled to share new single “Running Slow,” a track with clean vocals and raw sonic booms that shimmer alongside her latest EP, Talk Talk. The band’s songwriter, guitarist, and frontwoman Margaret Sohn is the second artist to come from label Spanish Prayers, following ambient pop band Cigarettes After Sex. Her style features throwback fuzz and distortion reminiscent of mid-2000’s indie rock, while still keeping the music modern and current.
The homage— whether on purpose or not— is a refreshing new take on a genre that came post-alternative and dominated for over 10 years. The difference is that Sohn takes these styles of indie fuzz and lingering, building single notes that make it increasingly more dynamic than most.
Talk Talk formed over a frigid winter break in a college dormitory at New York University. Sohn, who currently studies music technology and production, began writing with one goal: to make music that she enjoyed. Not intentionally writing to officially release the songs, Sohn experienced a pleasant turn of events when people responded quite positively to her music. She then found a drummer, Greg Tock, and bassist, Zoltan Sindhu, both classmates who helped her bring Talk Talk to life.
The EP contains four tracks that sparkle on their own, while at the same time create a building suspense that eventually explodes. “Please, Be Quiet” and “Dry My Love” launch with a slow beginning that gradually builds into an exciting wall of sound that pushes and pulls like a crowd. “Talk Talk” opens the album, a contemplative addition that captures a brief moment in time. Listening to the delicious synth accents, indie electronic band The Naked and Famous come to mind.
Fresh new single, “Running Slow,” is a song with a tinny beat that almost feels hollow, filled in by warm rhythm guitar that swirls in and out of the four-minute track. Similar to Talk Talk, Miss Grit creates her own signature sound, using the dichotomy of empty-to-full sounds that shift with ease. A refreshing, exciting dive back to synth-indie with a new perspective makes Miss Grit a stand out among the white noise.
Talk Talk and “Running Slow” are available for streaming on Spotify, YouTube, Pandora, PlayMusic, and other online platforms. Miss Grit is heading to the UK later this month and will support Cigarettes After Sex at Hidden Door Festival in Scotland.
