Bursting into the music scene at the young age of 19, singer songwriter Carla Geneve released her debut single, “Greg’s Discount Chemist,” last year with overwhelming support, particularly from Australian radio station, Triple J. She rapidly emerged in the folk and alternative rock scene, snatching gigs all over Perth and the surrounding areas. Now a year later, she is still blowing up, named by Pilerats as one of 18 Artists to Watch in 2018.

Recently Geneve shared new single “Yesterday’s Clothes” off her upcoming debut self-titled EP, out June 7th. At the beginning, the drum beat starts off steady and carries a calming pace through the entirety of the song, nostalgic words seep with meaning as Geneve sings of prior love and loss. She shouts wistful words with soul and vivacity. “I’ve been left wondering, would you sleep better without me?” she ponders in the chorus, and later in the verse, “If I was a winner I'd have won you back quicker. But I am runner up, and I might as well have lost.”

A slow and crisp guitar lead accompanies her gentle voice, the two dancing in unison across the four minute and twenty-three second track. The combination is a whirlwind of elegant beauty, washing over and engulfing like a soft summer breeze. With every word, Geneve captures the heartbreaking vulnerability of a regretful moment in time.

About the song, Geneve explains, "‘Yesterday’s Clothes’ is about falling out of love with someone and feeling guilty about it. I wrote it at time when I was burning the candle at both ends and had no energy left to try to deal with the end of a relationship. Most of the words came when I was doing a long drive back from some gig or another in regional WA. I’d been up all night and had to be somewhere the next day, so I hadn’t had a shower or changed clothes. When you’re on your own driving for hours and hours it’s hard to avoid thinking about stuff that you don’t want to, so I guess I wrote the song to try to come to terms with my thoughts and situation."

Geneve has won numerous awards after releasing her second single, “Listening”— with a total of seven nominations at the 2018 WAM Awards— and was named one of The West Australian’s Six Brightest Young Stars of 2019. Earlier this year, Geneve shared the stage with tongue-in-cheek indie pioneer Kurt Vile, his band The Violators, and RVG on April 28th.

Continuously, Carla Geneve will bring her music to North America this June, with plans to support San Cisco in New York City at Berlin on June 24th.
