Delta Sleep’s acoustic demo of “Sans Soleil” is a track with a crisp, hypnotic melody that connects like a perfect puzzle piece to the group’s name.

Consisting of a simple guitar rhythm and notes picked repeatedly through the three-minute track, the song delicately blends vocalist Devin Yuceil’s rough, nearly grainy voice with the ever-permeating guitar. It flows seamlessly, and listening to it closely feels like a gentle onset of a dream. Compared to the official album release of the track, this version is mystical and much less mathy. It’s for contemplation, or as a solid sonic layer to block noisy, outside stimuli.

Yuceil sings of being alone, and moving on from a time and place that no longer exists in his reality. Memories seem to haunt him as he talks about being cold and broken. It’s without doubt a dark song. However, the acoustic guitar takes a bit of the heaviness away. It sedates the emotions that are so clearly expressed in the original album recording. Sad and soulful, the lyrics resonate over mesmerizing melodies in this stripped-down version. “Cold and all alone, still I feel more at home. Sleeping rough under this tree, than back in district three.”

Just in time for Record Store Day on April 13th, this demo of “Sans Soleil” is part of their newest EP Ghost City Rarities, made up of additional demos and unheard versions from 2018’s Ghost City. The Brighton group known for pushing the boundaries of math-rock to new territory will release the EP through UK label Big Scary Monsters, home to American Football, Minus the Bear, and Cursive.

Delta Sleep is also currently on tour in North America, ending on April 20th in Philadelphia, PA. For all upcoming dates, see below.
