A year after the release of their EP, Dumbness, Cherry returns with three new tracks on a 7” titled Strong, out now for purchase and streaming. The new music heralds the beginning of a tour with Tiger Jaw, who are on their self-titled 10 year anniversary tour. Cherry, based out of Philadelphia, consists of Russel Edling and Justin Fox on guitars, Eric Osman on drums, Matt Schimelfenig on keys, and Spencer Colmbs on bass. Russell Edling has spoken about how he found much of the inspiration behind starting Cherry during the last days of his previous project, Kite Party, which he shared with Fox. Edling has said that in those final days as the band got more serious about the project, the music started to mean less and less.

He started Cherry in hopes of being able to make music that he could enjoy and focus on the music instead of the abstract concept of trying to be an artist. You can hear this motivation in Dumbness—the music, which is a heady mix of nostalgia and atmospheric indie rock, is deeply unpretentious, and it is clear that the artists are making music because they deeply enjoy creating it.

Cherry’s new tracks, as well as their new music video for “Don’t Be Long,” shares this same tone. The video for “Don’t Be Long” is a meandering collage that perfectly fits the mood the song creates. It’s a perfect song for wandering, aimless, right at the start of autumn as summer turns to fall. It has the right hint of bittersweet. “The 15th” and “Occasional” are both effortlessly cool, indie rock that isn’t trying too hard to be art, while still maintaining a sound that is varied and fresh enough to be interesting.
